The mayor of Hastings is calling on his community to help unaccompanied migrant children that are being held in Hudson Valley.
Mayor Peter Swiderski says he wants the children at The Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry to be cared for, saying stories like these hit close to home for him.
There is now upward of 700 of those children without their families in New York state, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
In a letter sent out Wednesday night, Swiderski set up a GoFundMe page that would assist the Hastings-based charity Family to Family to provide items such as Spanish-language books and games, personal toiletry items and journals. These items will be put in welcome packs for the children.
The fund is less than $2,000 from reaching its goal of $8,000.
Even though there is a small number of migrant children in care at The Children's Village, Swiderski says every little bit counts.
To assist with the welcome packs and bringing in supplies, you can visit the Family to Family location on Warburton Avenue in Hastings starting next Tuesday through July 13 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
