Yonkers and Mount Vernon residents are hoping the new gunshot detection system, that could be introduced this summer, will help stop the recent escalation of violence.

The high-tech device uses sound waves and GPS to pinpoint the exact location where a shot had been fired and then videotapes the scene. Authorities in Mount Vernon and Yonkers say the system, which costs about $3 million, could help them track down gunmen within seconds after they open fire.

"It would go to the safety of these streets and the safety of this county," says Westchester County Executive Andy Spano.

Gaynell Byrd, who runs a deli on 3rd Avenue in Mount Vernon, says she is optimistic the new gunshot detection system could save lives.

"We hope it works," Byrd says. "It will enable the police department to get there more quickly."

However, fish market owner Frank Fiumara does not think the gadget will deter criminals bent on violence.

"I think they would be brazen," he says. "They just don't care."
