Groups rally against violence after mass shooting outside Canarsie lounge
Local organizations, family members of victims of violence and officials gathered outside Richard’s Hall and Lounge on Avenue L after a mass shooting over the weekend.
Four people were hurt during a shooting there early Sunday morning.
Richard Barrows, the owner of Richard's Restaurant and Bar, said he was in the back of the restaurant when the shots rang out.
“I just saw people started running," he said.
The incident comes amid several shootings in Brooklyn over the past week, including a 14-year-old shot dead in Sunset Park on Friday, a woman injured in a shooting Monday in Downtown Brooklyn, and a man fatally shot inside a car on Coney Island.
The rally called for an end to the violence as well as more funding for anti-violence programs and changes in legislation. Anti-violence groups, local leaders, and mothers who have lost children to violence like Natasha Christopher were in attendance. While nobody was killed in the Canarsie shooting, she says she's tired of hearing about the violence.
“People are supposed to be able to go out and make it back home. And that is a problem that you cannot even go out and make it back home safely. We must do better as a community. This is our community again. We have to do everything to end gun violence," Christopher said.
As of Tuesday evening, police say no arrests have been made in connection to the Canarsie shooting.
