Groundbreaking ceremony held for Metro-North Penn Station access project
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Metro-North Penn Station access project Thursday.
The project was designed to provide people with a speedier commute by allowing riders to take the Metro-North from the Bronx, Westchester and Connecticut to Penn Station and the west side of Manhattan. Four new stations will be located in Hunts Point, Parkchester, Morris Park and Co-op City.
Gov. Kathy Hochul first announced the project in Dec. 2021. She says it will make the trip to Penn Station around 50 minutes faster and provide new job opportunities.
Hochul was joined at the ceremony by several local leaders, including Bronx Borough president Vanessa Gibson, Rep. Ritchie Torres, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
"This transit desert in the East Bronx is going to be gone. Over half a million Bronx residents will live within one mile of one of these new stations. Think about what that does to your family as well," said Hochul.
