A long-vacant store front in Hartsdale is finally getting a new tenant.

Resident Ellen Tarpey says it was a real loss when the Rite Aid on East Hartsdale Avenue closed last year.

"There's a lot of seniors, including me, that don't drive, so they really counted on coming here for things," Tarpey says.

But now, Greenburgh town supervisor Paul Feiner says a new Key Food Supermarket is moving into the empty space.

"I met with the owners about a month ago and they're really excited. They're very community-based," Feiner says.

Feiner says the lease was signed last week and thinks the store could open as soon as this winter.

"I think it's great for the elderly. Honestly, not just for the elderly. But for anyone, just having the resource to help take care of their health and their bodies, overall," says community member Monty Edwards.

The news has Central Barber Shop barber David Ilyaich hoping the new addition boosts his business.

"Almost every customer, I always ask them, 'What do you guys think is a good idea?' Literally almost everyone says some kind of grocery store because that's what it's lacking," Ilyaich says.

While many people are excited about the new grocery store, supervisor Feiner says it could increase traffic in the area.

It's why he's already working on a solution to mitigate it.

"We're going to be installing red light cameras by the end of the year and that should be helpful," Feiner says.

Ilyaich says he's not worried about any construction or parking issues.

"There's plenty of parking over there, I don't think it's at all going to be a problem," Ilyaich says.
