Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an e-bike legislation Thursday that will make the sale of faulty batteries a criminal offense.

The bill also aims to increase the safety standards for lithium-ion batteries.

This comes as the FDNY says the city has seen more than 100 lithium ion-battery fire investigations so far this year resulting in at least one death.

In 2023, fires caused by the batteries led to 18 deaths and 150 injuries, officials say.

Gov. Hochul also said the legislation will raise awareness about how to properly store and charge e-bikes, something that often isn't explained at their time of purchase.
