Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that summer schools will not open for in-class teaching – only distance learning will be allowed.
The announcement comes as the state Department of Health investigates 157 cases of what may be a COVID-19-related illness in children. It's been found in 13 countries and 25 states.
The governor said that no determination yet has been made about the fall semester and that reopening guidance for schools will be sent out in June.

Notes from today’s briefing are below:
- Cuomo: 105 New Yorkers died on Wednesday, 78 in hospitals, 27 in nursing homes.
- Rockland County is now eligible for elective surgery and ambulatory care.
- Gov. Cuomo says the reason why first responders, health care providers didn't have the highest rate of infection is because "PPE works."
- "The mask is not just a social symbol...If it reduced the infection rate for them, it will reduce the infection rate for you."
- NYS Contact Tracing will show up on your phone from a tracer. "It's not a scam." The governor says you should take that phone call.
- The state DOH is investigating 157 cases of what may be a COVID-related illness in children. It's been found in 13 countries and 25 states.
- Gov. Cuomo. Summer school will not open statewide for in-class teaching. It will be for distancing learning. It's still to early to make a determination on the fall semester. State plans to issue guidelines for reopening in June.
- Downstate beaches open tomorrow include Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow, Hither HIlls and Robert Moses. Open 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., swimming until 5 p.m. Strict restrictions are in place. The governor says the beaches, opening at 50% capacity are expected to fill up fast.
