Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New
York State will be providing resources to help clean up the city of Mount
Vernon following the suspension of garbage pickup.
The city has been dealing with a pile of garbage when pickup was suspended due
to a lack of operable garbage trucks.
Henry Martin has been living in Mount Vernon for three years and has noticed
the mess piled on the sidewalks.
“This is the worst that I’ve ever seen the garbage situation,” Martin says.
Mount Vernon Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard has been in a dispute with City
Comptroller Deborah Reynolds regarding the safety of garbage trucks and other
city vehicles, prompting the stoppage of garbage pickup recently.
“We only have eight trucks
that are operable,” Patterson-Howard says. “Of the eight trucks, several of our
garbage trucks have bald tires and these trucks are sliding through the streets
and are unsafe on hills.”
The mayor says the issue is
due to around $500,000 in unpaid bill, which she says is the comptroller’s
responsibility.
Reynolds, who was under fire for a similar issue regarding Mount Vernon fire
trucks, says Patterson-Howard doesn’t know how to do her job.
The city is also receiving help from Yonkers and New York City to help clean up
the garbage.
Patterson-Howard says New York City will be loaning Mount Vernon eight
sanitation trucks for at least 90 days.
Residents on the south side of the city can expect to have their garbage
picked up Saturday with those on the north side receiving their pickup on
Tuesday.
