Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday that five more people tested positive for the coronavirus stemming from a New Rochelle attorney.

The initial cases involved the attorney, his wife, their 20-year-old son and their 14-year-old daughter. A neighbor who drove the attorney to the doctor also tested positive.

Cuomo says a friend of the 50-year-old attorney, that friend’s wife, their two sons and a daughter have the virus. Another daughter tested negative.

The total number of cases in New York is now 11, which includes a woman in Manhattan. Gov. Cuomo made the announcement during his third news conference of the day.

Earlier, the governor announced that the attorney from New Rochelle is "now in stable condition and is improving." He had been hospitalized in serious condition at a Manhattan hospital just a day earlier. The attorney's wife, two children and a neighbor who also have the virus are being quarantined at home.

Yeshiva University has confirmed one of its students, the attorney's son, was diagnosed with coronavirus. The school will be closed through Friday.

The 14-year-old daughter attends SAR High School in the Bronx. The school will be closed until March 11. People who had contact with the daughter should be under self-quarantine through Friday. SAR Elementary School will be closed through Friday.

Three of the children who tested positive go to school at the Westchester Torah Academy in White Plains, which was already scheduled to be closed through Friday out of precaution.

News 12 also learned that the Hastings School District will be closed for the rest of the week. The decision comes after a parent of a student there was at a location now closed due to a confirmed case of the coronavirus. The district also canceled all events from now until Sunday to thoroughly sanitize the buildings and equipment

The synagogue they attended, Young Israel of New Rochelle, will be closed through March 8. Anyone who had contact with the family should also be on self-quarantine.

The Hastings School District will also be closed for the rest of the week. The Mount Vernon City School District will also be closed through at least Friday out of an abundance of caution after two students were quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Cuomo also said that the state is recalling all CUNY and SUNY students who are doing study abroad programs in countries where the coronavirus outbreak has been prevalent. Those countries are China, Italy, Japan, Iran and South Korea.

Those students will be coming back on a chartered plane that will fly into Stewart Airport in Orange County.

The governor says the students will be quarantined for about 14 days in a dorm-like setting.

The Hastings School District will be closed the rest of the week after a parent of a student came in contact with a child now under quarantine.

 

Gov. Cuomo says the 39-year-old woman, the first case in New York, is recovering at her home.

The attorney works at the firm Lewish and Garbuz. Gov. Cuomo says workers at the law firm are being tested for the virus. So far, no one has come back positive.
