COVID-19 vaccinations are starting as staff and residents at one Orange County nursing home are in the midst of a deadly coronavirus outbreak.
Valley View Nursing Home in Goshen is now volunteering to be one of the first facilities in the Hudson Valley to get the vaccine - and it can't come quickly enough.
The facility is in the midst of an outbreak, during the second wave of coronavirus, with 87 cases and 10 deaths since Thanksgiving. It's not currently clear when those first doses will come, but county officials say they will be administered as soon as possible to staff and the 272 residents by pharmacy provider and CVS affiliate Omnicare.
Nursing home administrator Laurence LaDue commented on the outbreak Monday saying, "Unfortunately, as COVID-19 cases have grown in New York state and nationally, they have also increased at Valley View. Our staff will continue to work tirelessly to provide our residents with the best care during the second wave of this pandemic."
Help is on the way. On Monday morning, a nurse in Queens received the first COVID-19 vaccine in New York. It happened during Gov. Andrew Cuomo's daily briefing, which was streamed online.
Orange County's hospitals are also preparing for their first shipment to vaccinate front-line workers.
Health and county officials say they're working out the details of exactly when that will be.
In Orange County, nursing homes have been among those hardest hit, with 121 deaths and 24 presumed deaths to date, according to state records. Valley View administration say they're keeping families closely informed and are appreciative of them and their staff during this unprecedented time.
