The Good Samaritan who found an abandoned newborn in Crotona Park is the boy's father, police said Sunday.

The man called police Saturday about 1 p.m. Authorities say the child's mother asked the father to drop the baby off at a safe place, such as a hospital or firehouse, as designated by New York law. The case is under investigation.

Doctors say the umbilical cord was still attached when the infant was dropped off at the hospital. The baby is in stable condition.
