A gas leak forced the evacuation of a school in Mamaroneck today.
Administrators at the French American School on New Street say the smelled gas around 10:15 a.m., and students and faculty were immediately evacuated to a safe zone.
The fire department arrived and quickly found the source of the odor. "We checked the kitchen and found a small gas leak and called Con Ed. Con Ed arrived 10 minutes later and found a pilot light out," says Mamaroneck Fire Chief Tracey Schmaling.
A crew from Con Ed fixed the problem, and kids were back inside the school within the hour. There are no reports of sickness.
