A student slashed another student at a Mount Vernon middle school Wednesday, and police believe the two were members of rival gangs.
Police say the fight began when students who were supposed to be suspended showed up at A.B. Davis Middle School. Police say at that point, one student slashed the 15-year-old victim. Despite excessive bleeding, the teen is expected to be fine. The suspect got away, but police did arrest two people involved in the fight, who were not students at the school, for trespassing. Police are reviewing the school's surveillance video to track down others involved in the fight.
Superintendent Brenda Smith says she's very upset to hear about gangs and violence touching kids at the middle school level. Smith says she plans to press charges against those involved and will hold meetings with parents about how to deal with school violence.
