The Galleria at White Plains, part of the downtown for over 40 years, will close next March, according to the mall’s owners, Pacific Retail Capital Partners.
It comes one month after they announced they plan to redevelop the site into mixed-use commercial and residential space.
The owner says that tenants are receiving termination notices in accordance with their leases.
They add they are committed to assisting them in making a smooth transition and are happy to connect them, so they consider moving to one of Pacific Retail’s other properties in the region.
White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach says the project is a major piece of the revamp that's been going on in the city the last few years.
"The Galleria, this building itself, people have fond memories, but it is a megablock. It's not good downtown city design. Right now we're in a tunnel over the street where pedestrians prefer not to walk and things like that," he says.
Pacific Retail said they're willing to assist the businesses there with finding another location at one of their other properties in the region.
