Furniture Sharehouse celebrates 10 years of giving back
A Westchester nonprofit is celebrating a decade of giving back to the community in West Harrison today.
Local dignitaries, supporters, volunteers and executives of the Furniture Sharehouse gathered at the organization's headquarters at the county airport Tuesday to celebrate a decade of helping Westchester residents in need.
The nonprofit organization works with local agencies to provide free furniture to families moving out of homeless shelters, recovering from natural disasters or escaping domestic violence.
County Executive Rob Astorino says the organization has been a life saver for many Westchester families. "If you have somebody who is right on the edge of poverty, or someone who's escaping domestic violence and starting somewhere new, these are things that are essential. And it doesn't cost everything because it's been donated."
Since 2007, Furniture Sharehouse has served 11,000 people and given away more than 60,000 pieces of furniture to families in need.
