Friends and family said their final goodbyes Friday to a woman who was found dead in a Mount Vernon jail cell.
A funeral was held for Raynette Turner, 42, at the Holy Tabernacle Church in Mount Vernon. Among the mourners were City Council members Robert Apuzzo and Richard Thomas, Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis and former Mayor Clinton Young. Her three daughters and five sons, all between the ages of 11 and 24, were also in attendance.
The mother of eight was found dead July 27 inside a holding cell two days after a shoplifting arrest. City officials say Turner complained of feeling ill and was taken to the hospital before her death. Police say Turner appeared to have died in her sleep after being taken back to the jail.
An autopsy performed to determine Turner's cause of death was inconclusive. Toxicology results have not yet been released.
The state's attorney general is examining the case to determine whether any criminal charges should be filed.
