A huge crowd came out Sunday to support the family of a Peekskill police officer who left behind a wife and four children.
Christopher Vazeos was remembered at a fundraiser at the Christopher Columbus Society.
Officials say 49-year-old Vazeos died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his home on Welcher Avenue on July 11.
President of the Peekskill PBA Brandon Kruithof helped organize the fundraiser. He says everything was donated--from the location to the food and beverages.
Vazeo's eldest son Nick, 20, says he is following in his dad's footsteps. He is pursuing a career in law enforcement and is currently a probationary officer at the Rockland County Police Academy.
The money raised at Sunday's event will go directly to the Vazeos family.
Vazeos was a lifelong Peekskill resident and a 23-year veteran of the force.
