A proposal to bring a French-American school to White Plains went down in defeat Wednesday.

The White Plains Common Council voted 4-3 in favor of the plan to build a private school at the former Ridgeway Country Club site but the French-American School of New York needed a 5-vote supermajority for it to pass. Opponents of the controversial plan applauded the council for its decision. 

The $60 million proposal called for consolidating French-American schools in Scarsdale, Mamaroneck and Larchmont into a single pre-K through 12th grade campus. Opponents of the plan said the school would just be too large for the area.

Another main objection of the proposal was public safety. The plan was revised several times to address concerns, but some felt it still fell short.

"The closure of Hathaway Lane would have caused such problems in terms of people who live there, in terms of emergency vehicles," said Terri Gomez, an opponent of the plan.

French-American school officials say they are not surprised by the vote. They say they are taking the fight to court.
