Former Westchester District Attorney Carl Vergari is being remembered Monday as a man whose legacy of professionalism, integrity and public service will never be forgotten.
Vergari, who served as the DA for 25 years, died Sunday in Florida at the age of 84. He was responsible for reorganizing the county's legal system from the ground up beginning in 1968. In addition, he's known for setting a tone at the county courthouse. Vergari also founded the county's domestic violence unit in the 1970s. Andy Rubin worked with Vergari for more than 14 years. He says Vergari was a great man and a classy gentleman who was always interested in doing what was right.
The former DA left office in 1993 and moved with his wife to West Palm Beach, Florida. His health suffered after he hurt his head during a fall at his home. Funeral services for Vergari will be held Friday in Bronxville.
