Former United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, one of the leading national voices in the Democratic Party, was in Tarrytown Wednesday night to help rally for U.S. House candidate Cait Conley.
Conley is hoping to flip the seat from incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler. It is one of the most watched races in the country, which could help determine which party controls the House of Representatives next year.
"One of the reasons you find yourself at the center of the political universe is this is, statistically speaking, a 50/50 district," Buttigieg said to the crowd. "But the big issues this year aren't 50/50 issues."
In her remarks, Conley agreed, saying "This fight isn't about the Hudson Valley, but is truly about the nation."
The standing room-only crowd at Tarrytown Music Hall did not exactly need to be convinced. Many held signs and chanted Conley's name throughout the night.
"There's always a need for building up enthusiasm, get out the vote," said Irvington Constance Kehoe of the night.
Lawler has already been bringing multiple big names from the Trump administration to the Hudson Valley over the last few months, including Dr. Mehmet Oz and President Donald Trump himself.
"If Republicans like Mike Lawler have to run on their record, their positions, their policies, they will lose," Buttigieg said to cheers.
When he brought up President Trump's May visit, he wondered, "What exactly were they celebrating?"
Wednesday night was Conley's turn to have the big-name guest in Buttigieg - someone who could be running for president himself in 2028, and who Conley told News 12 after the event that she has a lot in common with, thanks to their shared military service.
"We swore an oath to this Constitution to defend the country, to put this country over any part or person, and that is the message I want to bring - we win this district by unifying people," she said.
Conley and Lawler are expected to be on stage together at least twice for debates - the first of which will be Sept. 28 on News 12.
