A former cantor of the Pittsburgh synagogue where 11 people were fatally shot Saturday is recalling the temple and its congregants.
Westchester resident Shira Adler was the former cantor at the Tree of Life synagogue until her family moved to Westchester.
She says the synagogue has a special place in her heart.
"Every single life we lost was somebody’s mother, grandmother, parent, sister, friend, lover, child," she says. "We need to put a face on every single name of every human we've lost."
She says Rose, a 94-year-old victim, came to mind when she first heard the names of the people who were shot.
"It actually brings a smile to my face to think of Rose, and you know where they sit, you can remember that energy,” says Adler. "When my daughter was little, she used to go up in the back and sit next to whatever elderly congregation member was there by themselves."
She hopes the tradition will carry on as she sings to a new congregation.
She is now a part-time clergy member at Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains.
On Sunday, she joined a packed room full of congregation members, elected officials and faith leaders to honor the victims of the Pittsburgh shooting.
There will be several prayer vigils in Westchester following Saturday’s attack throughout the week.
