A familiar face to many at News 12 is now facing the fight of her life.
Former News 12 reporter Amy McGorry is urgently searching for a living liver donor as she battles two chronic liver diseases.
McGorry has been living with autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis, also known as PBC, for most of her life. Both conditions cause permanent damage to the liver.
But in recent months, McGorry says her health has taken a turn. She says she has experienced sudden fainting and internal bleeding as her condition has worsened.
McGorry says the moment doctors told her she needed a liver transplant was when the reality of her illness truly set in.
“They said the problem though with PBC is I look like I’m healthy, but the amount of destruction that has gone on in the liver and what the liver does to everything else, I’m not,” McGorry said.
McGorry says time is critical in finding a living donor match.
Doctors say a living donor only needs to donate a portion of their liver, which typically regenerates within eight to 12 weeks.
