Fire and police are were on Chauncey Street conducting their investigation, trying to figure out the exact cause.

One man who was sleeping inside says he helped a man with burns get out.

"I just want to save his life, that's all I was thinking. That's all I was thinking about, saving his life. I was 100% okay. And I'm a stronger man, so that's why I do," said Johanel Fernandez.

"We're praying for all the families, members and victims. It's a tragedy for our city, but we're strong and resilient," said Caba. "This is a devastating loss for a family and for our community. On behalf of the City of Perth Amboy, I extend my deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy."

The mayor added, "I want to thank our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and mutual aid partners who responded to the scene and worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances. As we continue to learn more, I ask our community to keep the family in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this painful time."

Caba said out of respect for the family, no additional information is being released at this time.
