Thanks for joining us here on mornings on news 12 on a Friday, December 1st. I'm m mad and I'm Simon Choudry. So we've been talking about the rain. Will it affect our weekend plans? Let's check in with storm watch team. Meteorologist, Alex Calam. Not a bad start to December temperature wise though. Now it's true. It is cold out there this morning in the mid twenties for North Jersey, interior parts of the state only in the twenties, but we are all warming up very quickly. I want to take you to one of the cooler spots. Somerset County is sitting in the mid twenties right now. At Best Rocky Hill is 30. So you definitely need to jack it early but you don't get by mid morning, at least not the heavy jacket. You're sitting in the mid forties. The wind is very calm today but clouds are building and we have a chance for rain. It is after all the first day of December and on average temperatures are right around 49. So this is just about right for this time of the year. But by the end of the month, we go down to 41 for your average morning temperature on average by the end of the month, 28. And yeah, December typically is when we see our first snow of the season last year though. We didn't see our first inch of snow until February this weekend. We're just talking plain old rain and there could be plenty of it on Sunday. Saturday looks dry and cloudy and mild coming up. We'll show you what those numbers look like. Alex. Just Alan knows if we got some rain headed our way for this first day of December. Yeah, not a lot, but enough that it's going to cause a little bit of an inconvenience there for the evening commute. Take a look at the exact timing here, hour by hour. You're going to notice that the odds go up after three o'clock. So for that evening commute, 456, you're going to see some of these showers could be that little bit of a steadier burst here 6 to 7 p.m. and then it tails off by nine o'clock. We're pretty much done with the rain. That's good. But then for the weekend, maybe not the best looking weekend, but salvaging Saturday, Saturday, how about 60? I'm pushing up the high because I have a feeling we're going to get a couple of peaks of sunshine and that's going to allow the temperatures to soar enjoy tomorrow outside while you can because the rain returns on Sunday, it will also be cooler. It'll be a little bit on the dreary side. So let's take a look at that Sunday future cast because Saturday, I don't have much to show you because it's going to be dry. It's going to be a mix of sun and clouds for Sunday. However sure it starts off dry at about 7 a.m. But we're going to notice showers moving in from the south and west by the afternoon. Here we go by 11 a.m. Brunch plans move them inside because there will already be showers. This looks to be a little bit steadier of a rain compared to today's rain. Notice already some of the yellows on the feature cast around two o'clock. Then later on into the afternoon, even some orange, around 4 to 5 o'clock, there's a pocket of moderate to maybe heavy rain. That's possible that's going to move quickly through. So by the evening hours things start tapering off and Monday morning, we might have a lingering shower or two. But aside from that, we're pretty much smooth sailing, aside from today's showers and Sunday showers, I have that yellow highlight just so that, you know, that Sunday looks to be a little bit messy, messy Sunday, but Saturday is beautiful. Ok. I guess we got to take what we can get, salvage a little bit of the, it's better than the teens.

Cats and dogs. They didn't even need to use one of the. Yeah, there you go. All right. Now, let's talk about a little bit more on that. And I heard your transition too, Lisa. It's not raining cats and dogs if you want to go back to that is better. Uh, me too, but we all heard it as we talk about our Friday forecast on this December 1st. Everybody, we're looking at a dry start to the day. Nothing you have to worry about through the morning, commute. Still dark and early sunrise right at seven o'clock on the day. This morning. It is a cold start in spots right now. Close to 40 or so. Not awful for this time of day. This time of the year in Harrison, 3940 in Port Chester to 42 in Yonkers. 29 though north into northern Westchester and Sommers at the moment. 32 in New City, 24 in Middletown. You get it, it's a chilly to even cold start north and west. It's a little bit better feeling closer to the Sound shore ride down. It is completely dry on live Doppler radar. Now, as we widen out the view a little bit though. You'll see some rain already moving through Ohio, West Virginia. This is all going to be heading in our direction, but at a much weaker state by the time it reaches us. So here's how the future cast plays out. Expect increasing clouds through the morning. Temperatures will be in the upper forties to near 50 into the afternoon. Cloudy skies will give way to a few spotty rain showers after around one or two o'clock this afternoon. And you could run into a couple of these light rain showers through about six or seven this evening, but it's not raining during that entire time. These are off and on showers fairly low impact weather, but just be prepared to get wet at times as we go throughout the afternoon and early evening. As we go throughout overnight tonight, mostly cloudy skies, there will be a few breaks of sunshine as we go throughout tomorrow morning, but expect more clouds than sun on Saturday, temperatures actually jump well into the fifties. It will feel quite nice for this time of the year tomorrow. But then we our track some rain moving in for Sunday could even be a spotty showers as early as Saturday evening. But as we go throughout the day on Sunday, during the early morning hours likely, ok. But into the afternoon and evening, we can get a period of some moderate rain across the entire lower Hudson valley, perhaps around a half inch or so of rain. So we want to keep an eye on that today, kind of an eye roll just because the second half of the day goes downhill a little bit but not awful. Not a wash out, just a few spotty showers during the afternoon and early evening. Overnight. Tonight, those showers done with before seven o'clock this evening. Then just mostly cloudy chilly lows in the upper thirties to near 40. Here's the extended, so Sunday, we are keeping an eye on just for some periods of moderate rain. The better half of the weekend, easily tomorrow, mostly cloudy to partly sunny Monday, breezy near 50 but it does turn a bit colder throughout next week, especially for Wednesday and Thursday with highs only around 40 degrees before those temperatures start to come up Friday and into next weekend back in the upper forties to near 50.

Talking about what this first weekend of December technically, well, not technically winter but kind of winter is going to be like rich. Yes, in the weather world it is the beginning of winter. Meteorological winter starts today and we're going to be warming things up. Today will be the warmest day of the week for our Monday through Friday time frame. Now starting off this morning, still that bit of a chill, but we have dry weather conditions you can see right now. 30 seven Hempstead, 37 in Valley Stream, 40 in Medford, 45 Bridge Hampton already 49 degrees in Montauk. You're gonna notice a different feel to the air for today. Starting off with sunshine and clouds during our midday. If you're gonna be around Jericho, today, temperatures will be in the lower fifties and then towards 567 o'clock, here comes some of that wet weather. So if you have the evening plans be prepared for some scattered showers is developing and it was uh temperatures again, they're cold right now and you can see the wet weather developing out to the west. This is approaching Long Island morning sunshine, then the clouds and the rain showers developing between about five and 7 p.m. And again, as we go through this evening, here's some of that wet weather. Around eight o'clock tonight, the showers are coming on through and that will be with us through about 10 p.m. And then right now your Saturday is more dry track rain for your Sunday. Again, highs today in the fifties morning, sunshine, afternoon clouds showers after four pm, sun goes down. Now at 425 lows are in the forties, showers through midnight and then some drizzle and fog through Saturday morning, mainly dry Saturday rain on Sunday, especially in the afternoon, drier weather coming in as we go towards next week. And right now Hanukkah, the start of that looks dry with temperatures in the forties.

What the great thing about coming in at 4 a.m. No traffic. No good, smooth sailing, smooth sailing. Yeah. And I guess still for right now. Not too bad. Yeah, it isn't too bad. We're still looking pretty good and the weather is not too bad. At least for the first half of today. Things do switch up later on, but the warmer temperatures are nice. Oh, yeah, we'll see that into the weekend as well. So we're looking forward to that fifties, uh, for a lot of us for today, you are gonna need those umbrellas for a little bit later on getting into your evening period and then, uh, for your tonight, we can expect things to kind of dry out. When I say tonight, we're looking closer to your maybe 89 o'clock hour. We're getting your future cast to time it out. But even still numbers don't fall off too much as we're seeing a lot of us into the forties for you tomorrow. Here's a look at later on this morning at about nine o'clock. We're in the forties. 41 for Birch Port, 44 for orange clouds fill in late parts of our morning. You can expect to see some showers getting into the afternoon, mainly for areas up north north of 84 1st. And then most of us will get engulfed into some rain. By the time we head into that commute home, 567 o'clock, by around your 89 o'clock hour, we're looking gonna dry out and we're looking good. Heading into your Saturday could see a little bit of some patchy fog for the early parts. Your Saturday. Keep that in mind if you do got some traveling to get done for the morning period, but we'll start to see some sunshine as it progressed into your afternoon. Still gonna battle a few clouds for your Saturday. But look at some of these numbers. You got 53 for Torrington, Thomaston, Watertown, 54 for Newtown, 52 for those out toward orange. So whatever plans you got going on for your Saturday, you are looking pretty good things change for your sub, looking dry, but a cloudy gray start for your Sunday morning. And then we see those showers start to work its way in right around the late morning and into the early parts of your afternoon where again, you will need the umbrella. We're talking heavier bouts of that rain, not the little stuff that we're gonna work with today. We really see things pick up. So just to put things into perspective, we're looking at about a quarter of an inch of rain for this first round for today. And then you're gonna tackle on another inch to an inch and a half by the time we head into your Sunday, where those are your total. So again, we're looking at a lot of rain to wrap up this weekend.

Fitness in Four: Get the most out of your next stroll

Welcome back to be. Well, time now for fitness and four, you know, walking is one of the easiest ways to go ahead and get active. It's low impact. It's good for your joints and it's free. So, all week we've been taking you walking, getting you motivated, getting you moving. It's time for us to enjoy the benefits of a great walk and Joyce is with me. So right now we have stuff in our hands, but only in one hand and that is for a specific reason. Yes. So it's called the suitcase carry. And when you carry something unbalanced as you walk, you're engaging all those core muscles as well as your back muscles, stabilizers, balance. So much benefit that comes just from carrying something in one hand and it can be a bag of books, right? Which is great. And on our way out, we would carry it in one hand and then switch to the other hand when we're on our way home. Exactly. Ok. And you could also use a weight. Yeah, absolutely. If you have access to a dumbbell, you can walk with the dumbbell by your side. Ok. And then you can move it to your shoulder. Yes. And then even overhead, which then engages your whole arm, shoulder upper body back and then you, yeah. So maybe do this for one block and then put it back down. Exactly. You don't want, you don't want to. Ok. So moving it around, let's lose the weight. And for people who are trying to maybe start walking, we could start. All right. So we have one minute, just a nice brisk walk. But to then start challenging our balance, you were suggesting moving everything slow. So balance is so important, especially as we start to get older. And the research shows that walking is one of the very best things you can do for your balance. So what if you really slow it down? Like you're walking through a cement or, or quick sand really slow? You find your balance is challenged, your hip, Lexor your back, your quads, you feel your quads, I actually feel my abs as soon as I pull it up and I kind of just tighten everything. It's like shocking how hard it is it is. So I would do this then for what one minute of my walk really, really go slow mo and then as the third minute, what would I do? My, one of my favorites is let's walk sideways and as we were talking about earlier, right, people tend to move just forward and backwards. But this side movement moving in a lateral plane this is lateral. Right. Yes, it's amazing how you feel it in your hips and your glutes and all of these different little muscles that we tend to ignore. OK. And then obviously we want to also go the other way. You got to be balanced on both sides. All right, I like it so we can change up our workout by changing direction, changing what we're holding or even change the speed because I really like to slow it down. And then what I always recommend is for that last minute. Yes. Walk as briskly as you can. You're ready to race. Yeah, you're ready to go. No running. Ok. So who won that race? You know, I had to win and, you know, I had to go further than her. She's like, are we still going? And I was like, no.
