First lady Jill Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s
top infectious disease expert, attended an event at the Absynnian Baptist
Church in Harlem as part of President Joe Biden’s big push to get more
Americans vaccinated.
New COVID-19 infection rates have dropped dramatically in
the U.S., but so have vaccination rates – and that has the president and health
officials worried.
President Biden's goal for 70% of adults in the U.S. to have
their first dose of the vaccine by July Fourth is not likely to be met,
according to health experts. As of June 3, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention says 63% of adults have received their first shot.
Here's the breakdown of adults ages 18 years and older in
the tri-state area according to the CDC:
- In New York – 68.6% have at least one shot.
These percentages would be lower if you take into account
children as young as 12 years old who recently became eligible to get the
vaccine.
Incentives are also being offered to entice people to get
vaccinated. Anheuser-Busch is offering a free drink for adults 21 and older who
get their shot by July Fourth.
President Biden also says efforts are underway to make some
vaccination sites 24 hours. Also, some day care centers may offer free child
care so parents can get their shot.
