Yonkers firefighters are monitoring the area surrounding the site of Wednesday's mudslide.

The mudslide pushed mud and debris behind an apartment complex at 95-97 Walsh Road, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 people, many of whom are elderly or disabled.

Officials were worried that Saturday's rain would cause a retaining wall to fall into the nine-story building. State engineers also worked Friday to construct a makeshift gutter system, hoping that it would mitigate any problems the rainfall might bring. Officials say the efforts were successful.

The displaced residents were allowed to briefly return Friday to gather essential belongings. No residents were allowed inside Saturday out of fear of another collapse. Officials say residents will be allowed back inside via escort Sunday.

The residents are expected to be able to return home in about two weeks.
