New Rochelle firefighters partnered with the American Red Cross to distribute free smoke detectors today.
The Red Cross is sponsoring a national campaign to both prevent house fires and make sure people get out alive if one does break out.
An army of volunteers canvassed neighborhoods so the off-duty firefighters could install the smoke detectors and replace ones that didn't work anymore.
The goal was to install 50 smoke detectors in just one day, then expand the pilot program to help other communities.
