Firefighters battled a massive blaze at an apartment building in Peekskill Sunday night.

Fire officials say they got a call around 10:45 p.m. about the flames at the building on Crompond Road.

The building, which was under construction, was unoccupied and was being built as part of a senior citizen complex. Flames could be seen across the Hudson River in Rockland County.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike Sniffen says the building was fully engulfed when crews arrived. He says they also had trouble getting water up to the site so they had to call in tankers.

About nine departments responded from neighboring communities and about 150 firefighters.

"It was very hot. The guy had machines in his yard and they started to melt. Some of the lights on our trucks melted, it was just a very intense heat," says Sniffen.

Cranes and other equipment were brought in early this morning to turn over the rubble to get to hot spots while firefighters sprayed water on the pile from up in the bucket.

Firefighters say the structure was too badly burned for them to determine the cause of the fire.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Firefighters left the scene around 10 a.m. Monday and came back in the afternoon for a small flash fire in a stairwell.

A contracted worker at the site told News 12 construction on the four-story building was months ahead of schedule and about halfway done.
