A fire ripped through the top floor of a Yonkers apartment building early Friday, sending six families out of their beds and onto the street.
The two-alarm fire broke out in what appears to be a back bedroom at 225 Nepperhan Ave. around 4:30 a.m. Fire officials say only one side of the building suffered fire and water damage.
Everyone got out of the building safely, but one woman fell and a firefighter suffered minor burns on his arm.
The Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at a nearby church to help the 22 adults and four children with lodging and food. If the landlord gets the green light, some residents could be able to return to their apartments soon.
