A building caught fire on Mount Vernon Avenue in Mount Vernon Wednesday night, officials say.
Firefighters were able to extinguish it within 20 minutes after arriving around 7:45 p.m., but not before it did enough damage to displace 26 people.
News 12 has learned that one person was forced to leap from the building's fire escape into a police officer's arms, and that officer is being treated for injuries.
One person suffered smoke inhalation, and a cat died.
Officials say the fire reignited around 9:15 p.m.
Mayor Richard Thomas says the blaze started in one of the rear apartments, but an investigation into the exact cause is ongoing.
