A massive fire destroyed multiple businesses along a city block in Mount Vernon early Monday morning.
Officials say the fire broke out at around 1 a.m. in the basement of Sal's Deli at 266 Gramatan Ave. The flames spread to and gutted a total of four businesses.
Apartments located above the businesses also caught fire and collapsed. Six residents were displaced.
"It's a very good thing we did pull the guys out because it collapsed entirely a short time later," says Mount Vernon Deputy Fire Chief Tom Duffy.
The smoke and flames also forced the closure of the nearby Nelson Mandela High School.
Some firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
