Rye firefighters responded to a report of a small fire at the June and Ho gourmet deli on Purchase Street near the center of town Friday afternoon.
An assistant fire chief said it was not a "normal fire."
"There was a fire in the walls by a dumbwaiter that extended to the second floor. We had to chop into a tile wall to extinguish the fire," said First Assistant Fire Chief Peter Cotter.
No one was reported injured, but one firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
