Firefighters battled a fire at a commercial and residential building on South Fourth Avenue Friday afternoon in Mount Vernon.
The fire sparked at around 1 p.m. at a store called Home Care Discount. Shanique Lynch, who works at the Essence of Beauty Salon next door, says she and her co-workers saw smoke coming out of the building.
Lynch says there is an apartment on the other side of the building, where a dog was rescued from the fire. EMS crews were on hand, but there was no report of any injuries.
Nearby businesses reported some smoke coming through their vents, but did not sustain any damage from the fire.
