Fellow police officers and loved ones paid a final farewell to an NYPD officer from New Rochelle who was killed in a car crash last week.
Thousands of NYPD officers in their navy blue uniforms and white gloves lined the entrance to Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe as Officer Brian Kessler's casket, draped in green and white, was carried in.
The 28-year-old rookie cop from the 31st Precinct was off duty when he was driving along Shore Road in the Bronx last Wednesday morning and slammed head-on into a garbage truck. Kessler was on his way to his home in New Rochelle after working an overnight shift at police headquarters in lower Manhattan.
“Down to earth, mellow, a true police officer,” are just some of the words being used to describe Kessler today.
"He was the kind of person that's wanted to help people out. He was born with that characteristics that he wanted to go and help people,” says Officer Azhaan Saleem.
Kessler leaves behind his fiancée, parents, a brother and grandmother.
