(10/20/06) YONKERS - Fierce winds literally shook the trees out of the ground Friday while Westchester residents fought wind-related power outages.
Strong winds caused a tree to slam through the roof of a Yonkers house. The tree crashed through the Galban family's home, collapsing part of the attic and master bedroom. In another wind-related incident, White Plains police shut down Main Street after plywood and other debris was blown from the construction site at the Ritz-Carlton. Police say the wind blew a construction worker into a stairwell. His back injury is not considered life threatening.
The wind also caused major power outages. Con Edison reports at the height of outages, about 3,000 had no power in Westchester and nearly 2,000 in Orange and Rockland counties. Con Edison officials say they anticipated the windstorm and contracted extra crews to work Friday night.
