Detectives are investigating how a piece of heavy metal fencing toppled over, fatally striking a 3-year-old Armonk girl in the head Monday.
North Castle police say Juliana Affrunti was leaning against a deck at her house before 5 p.m. when the fence, which was under construction, fell over.
Authorities say Affrunti was playing in her backyard with other children, which may have included her brothers, and that the girl's parents were home.
Authorities say the victim's mother placed a frantic call to 911. Officers and EMTs found Affrunti bleeding from her head and ears. She was flow by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
"I do know the family and it's devastating," says Amy Swiss. "As a parent, you can't help but think it could have happened to any of us and we're just keeping a very close eye on our kids."
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, however, officials believe the death was a tragic accident.
