The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Port Chester Village Friday, alleging the village?s trustee election methods prevent proper Hispanic representation.The Department of Justice also claims the voting methods violate the Voting Rights Act. The federal government insists the ?at large? elections that Port Chester holds, where an entire community votes, should be replaced with district-wide elections that are specific to certain areas.Port Chester Mayor Gerald Logan contends the village's procedures do not violate federal voting laws. Village leaders formed a voting rights commission ahead of the government?s data. According to village leaders, they twice invited representatives from the federal government to convene with them about the issue.The federal government is threatening to stop March elections that will decide who fills three empty seats. Port Chester is 43 percent Hispanic, yet no Latino has ever been elected to the Board of Trustees.
