There have now been 82 confirmed reports of illnesses linked to contaminated cinnamon applesauce pouches, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
An FDA source says lead contamination may have been an intentional act. The illness has affected mostly kids and older adults.
The FDA found elevated lead levels in cinnamon over 2,000 times higher than the proposed standards in an inspection conducted in an Austrofood facility in Ecuador.
The pouches were sold in the U.S. under the brands WanaBana, Weis Markets and Schnucks.
