A family is forced out into the cold after a fire broke out in their Mount Pleasant home.
Fire officials say they were called to a three-story home at 15 Bedford Road around 11:30 p.m. last night. According to investigators, it looks as though the fire may have started in the chimney, then spread to the roof and two rooms in the home.
Crews from several neighboring fire departments came in to help out. It took about 75 firefighters close to 45 minutes to get the fire knocked down.
Fire officials say there is a good bit of damage in one portion of house, and they say the frigid temperatures made the fire more difficult to fight. "It always dampens the ability of firemen to do their jobs when hoses are frozen solid and you're working in really cold conditions, you have to worry about slip and falls so it makes it a little bit hazardous," says Chappaqua Fire Chief Russell Maitland.
No one was injured, but the residents could not go back in due to the damage. Utilities to the home also had to be cut off.
