A family is remembering a young man who was killed last weekend in Peekskill

Joaquin Salazar, an 18-year-old from Peekskill, died Saturday after being stabbed near China Pier when a fight broke out amongst a group of people.

Another 18-year-old was stabbed in the stomach. The teen was in serious condition but is now in stable condition at a hospital.

Police say that the 17-year-old allegedly responsible, who was also injured, is facing second-degree murder and first-degree assault charges. He is currently in a juvenile detention center.

The Salazar family says they are clinging to memories of the soccer fanatic with aspirations of being successful at whatever he put his mind to and trying to bring others to the top with him.

"Yesterday, I was talking with a mother, she was telling me that her son goes to the same college as Joaquin, and she was telling me that Joaquin was paying the son's lunch and dinner every day," says Joaquin's mother Elvira Granda.

His cousin, Giuliano Santucci, remembers playing soccer together, while others are memorializing his jersey No. 7. More than 400 people have donated online to help honor his life.

"Joaquin would always help his friends who were less fortunate. So we're going to make sure some of the money still helps his friends and keep his legacy. And the other part is we're going to make sure he gets the service he deserves," says his sister Juliette Salazar.

The Salazar family says services for Joaquin will be held on Dec. 12.
