A retired NYPD detective was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Con Edison employee on the George Washington Bridge, according to police.
Victor Romero, 62, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly fatally shooting Koran Irvine, 46, during what police sources described as a possible road rage incident. Police say both men are from Rockland County.
Sources close to the investigation say Romero turned himself in.
According to the NYPD, officers initially responded to a report of a single-car crash on the outbound upper level of the bridge around 7 p.m. Tuesday. Police found Irvine unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the rear right shoulder.
Paramedics rushed him to Englewood Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say Romero is from Haverstraw. Sources say he worked in the NYPD’s Narcotics Borough Brooklyn North and retired 25 years ago.
Irvine was from Valley Cottage.
According to sources, Irvine recently celebrated his 20th anniversary working for Con Edison.
A Con Edison spokesperson released the following statement:
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him."
