A dramatic explosion tore through a single-family home in Croton-on-Hudson Tuesday afternoon, sending flames ripping through the structure and forcing a family to flee for safety.

The home at 22 Palmer Ave., which overlooks the Hudson River, was heavily damaged. The rear of the house appears to have sustained the most severe impact, with portions burned away and sections of the structure missing.

Multiple fire departments rushed to the scene, including crews from Croton-on-Hudson, Peekskill and Ossining, as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

Neighbors described a chaotic and emotional scene as flames spread rapidly.

“I looked out my bedroom window and saw like a sea of red,” said Marin Markic, a Croton-on-Hudson resident. “The flames were even kind of like getting close to our house. I grabbed my phone, ran out of the house. Next thing I know, I see my neighbors outside crying, screaming… saying, ‘I lost everything.’”

Despite the intensity of the fire, officials say there have been no reports of injuries at this time.

Fire officials remain on scene as cause and origin teams from the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department investigate what led to the explosion.
