Families of Westchester women who died following surgery demand doctor face charges
Another local woman has died at the hands of a doctor in the Dominican Republic, and her family says that doctor was involved in the death of another person from Westchester only days before.
Family members say Sharlyn Alamzar Paulino had six plastic surgery procedures in a single day and died days later. Paulino is the second Westchester woman to die after allegedly going under the knife with Dr. Felix Almanzar.
According to The Daily Mail, this marks the third American to die at the hands of Almanzar in the past month. Paulino, of Yonkers, died June 25, five days after her procedures. Family members say she complained of severe pains and that she died after going back to the clinic for a corrective operation.
As News 12 has reported, Alexandra Medina, of New Rochelle, died July 5 during a liposuction procedure with the same doctor. Family members says that previous doctors told her that her BMI was too high to perform the procedure.
Both families are now calling for Almanzar to be disallowed from performing cosmetic surgeries on any more patients. They also want to see criminal charges filed.
Now, Dominican news outlet El Nuevo Diario is reporting that the Dominican Ministry of Health says Almanzar is not licensed to practice surgery.
The FBI is investigating, saying in part in a statement, "At the request of Dominican authorities, the FBI continues to assist with the ongoing local investigations, to include support with toxicology as well as the arrival of a small team of FBI personnel in the Dominican Republic."
Paulino was buried in the Dominican Republic, where much of her family remains as they seek justice for her death.
