5ds agoThe Federal Aviation Administration is experiencing a shortage of air traffic controllers nationwide, with the Hudson Valley region also feeling the impact.
According to recent reports from the FAA, approximately 3,000 more air traffic controllers are needed across the country in the coming months.
Stewart International Airport in Orange County is among those expressing an urgent need for additional staff.
Currently, the FAA has over 11,000 employees who are either fully certified or in a stage where they can work independently. However, staffing plans from both the FAA and the air traffic controllers union indicate that a total of 14,600 controllers are required for the nation's airports.
To address this shortage, the FAA aims to hire at least 1,800 new controllers by September. However, the demand remains high, prompting concerns about the safety and efficiency of air traffic management.
Efforts to reach out to Westchester, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia airports to inquire about their inclusion in the staffing search are ongoing, with responses pending.
