An extreme cold warning has been issued for New York State as dangerously low temperatures are expected across the Hudson Valley this weekend.
News12 Meteorologists say some areas could feel temperatures ranging from 15 to 35 degrees below zero. Doctors warn that frostbite and hypothermia can begin within minutes on exposed skin. They say dressing in layers and covering as much skin as possible is critical when outdoors.
Early signs of frostbite can include numbness, tingling, redness or pain in affected areas.
Dr. Stephanie Widmer, an emergency medicine physician at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, said smaller body parts are especially vulnerable. "You really want to pay attention to the smaller areas on the body like your toes, your ears, your nose and your fingers," Widmer said.
Doctors say extreme cold poses a higher risk to young children, older adults, people with underlying health conditions and pets. They recommend staying indoors as much as possible.
Widmer also cautioned against using alcohol to feel warm. "Alcohol can increase heat loss, and if you drink too much it can contribute to individuals failing to recognize symptoms of extreme cold exposure," she said.
Hypothermia is a life-threatening condition that occurs when body temperature drops below 95 degrees. Doctors say it can develop after prolonged exposure to cold weather or cold water.
Symptoms may include severe shivering, slurred speech, confusion and fatigue. Widmer said mental changes are serious warning sign.
"If you're in extremely cold temperatures and you just feel mentally off, or someone you're with seems mentally off, that's a medical red flag and it's time to get evaluated and get out of the cold," she said.
