It’s allergy season – and experts say it’s expected to be a
bad one.
News 12 Meteorologist Alex Calamia says people might start
to feel the effects this week due to dry weather leading to a spike in pollen.
"A lot of times people will blame flowers for their
allergies, but a lot of times it’s the stuff you don’t see that creates pollen
– like maple. That’s going to be big this week. Juniper…these plants don’t rely
on pollinators to spread their pollen,” he said. “It’s all airborne. They
produce a lot of it."
Dr. Dipak Chandy, with Westchester Medical Center, tells
patients to start taking a non-sedating antihistamine before symptoms start.
But if symptoms have already begun, a non-sedating antihistamine can help
lessen them.
"If you've got a well-established post-nasal drip,
nasal congestion, things like that – you may also need some nasal steroid
spray," said Chandy.
