News 12 has learned human skeletal remains were discovered Tuesday at what a police source describes as an "old mob dumping ground" near the border of New Windsor and Cornwall.

Central Hudson confirms a crew performing routine maintenance uncovered the remains on company property off Route 9W, near Sloop Hill Road in New Windsor. The utility says it has owned the property since 1954.

A police source tells News 12 the remains appear to be old and perhaps complicating the discovery, were found in an area linked to organized crime dumpings dating back to the 1950s. It’s unclear who the remains belong to or how long they’ve been there, but the official says authorities will consider both local and wider cases when attempting to identify them.

State police say the remains were discovered during an excavation conducted by Central Hudson as part of a gas line installation project and that the investigation is in its early stages. Authorities say additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Central Hudson says it’s cooperating fully with authorities and will provide more information as the investigation continues.
