In Clifton, the investigation continues into Monday's fiery crash on Route 3 that left one driver dead.

While the roadway is being worked on, environmental concerns grow for residents living right behind the crash site. Jason Gavira says he was told not to go in his backyard on Normandy Road.

"We cannot do anything because it's hazardous," he said. "They told me there's chemicals. The kids are not supposed to go outside."

A 55-year-old truck driver from Linden died in the crash. The prosecutor's office says the commercial truck crashed into the barrier, causing it to catch on fire and explode. Clifton fire officials told News 12 that a bus rear-ended that truck, which caused the chain reaction.

Drums of chemicals exploded and fuel spilled throughout the area. At least four homes have caution tape on their properties. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is surveying the impacts.

"Everything is ruined and it smells like fumes," said Gavira. "It was diesel fuel I was told, and I was told not to go there and touch it. Leave it the way it is."

Puddles of chemicals and cinders damaged the Gavira's backyard.

"We're asthmatics and we have to stay inside and just see what happens," said Gavira. "Hopefully, the insurance will take care of the backyard because right now it's a mess."
