The elevator in the Tallman Towers apartment building in Nyack has been broken since June 9 – leaving dozens of residents reliant upon the stairs to get up and down the seven-story building.
Dot Durkin, 78, lives on the top floor. She relies on a cane to get around.
"What's wrong with these people?” said Durkin. “This is an emergency."
Other residents spoke with News 12 in the lobby on Monday afternoon. They shared their experiences over the past two weeks.
"I was home most of the time,” said Judy Jackson. “Because I didn't want to go up and down the stairs."
Residents recently got a notice that stated the elevator would be repaired today. That did not happen. Tenants say the communication with management and the elevator company has been an issue.
"I'm disappointed in the management,” said Jackson. “You can't talk to anybody. No one calls you back."
Durkin said, "It makes me mad that they keep lying about it.”
A representative for South Broadway Housing LLC, which owns the building, says the D&D Elevator company ordered a part that ended up being defective. They're told a new one could be delivered later this week or early next week.
News 12 was told the Village of Nyack has issued a violation relating to the broken elevator. The elevator company has not returned a call to comment.
