Another local supermarket is shutting its doors as Acme Markets announced the Eastchester store will close down in November.
The Eastchester location is one of four stores in New York and New Jersey that Acme plans to close this fall. The Eastchester store is expected to stay open until Nov. 4, while the other three locations in New Jersey will close Oct. 2.
A company spokesperson says these locations have underperformed and not met goals for years— and that by doing this, Acme will be able to shift its focus to existing stores as well as exploring options to expand elsewhere.
This location was acquired by Acme in 2015 as part of the A&P liquidation.
Shoppers who spoke with News 12 today say they're sad to hear the store is closing, and they hope another supermarket moves in. "Oh man, that's a problem. That's going to put us down to like, one grocery store in town and that's a madhouse to begin with. That's unfortunate," says one shopper.
An Acme spokesperson says that current employees will be given the option to transfer to other nearby stores. They say they're working to relocate associates, but says that layoffs are likely.
